Music Encounters
for the Mind

Today's well-documented research concludes that complementing physical fitness with continued and mindful music exposure could significantly impact the mind.

Music evokes a unique response that generates feelings, memories and amplifies imagination. Moreover, music is a sanctuary for personal thoughts and emotions, socially unifying and can mitigate stress. At the same time, music produces creative energy and can promote cognitive resilience by wiring new pathways in the brain.

One of the recent major studies of over 10,000 participants presents evidence suggesting that music-related activities can significantly decrease one's cognitive decline over time and may help reduce the risk of future dementia by as much as 39%.

Based on these findings, Jerzy Sapieyevski, an accomplished musician, composer and educator, brings his presentations to discuss and illustrate at the piano how music affects one's mind. His approach has been developed over the years of impactful university teaching and a past collaboration with neurologist, Dr. Joel M. Oster.

Sapieyevski also explores the cognitive value of basic music theory and introduces practical techniques that enhance 'listening' to music (vs. merely 'hearing' it). (Because music happens in the mind, profoundly deaf Beethoven could write the Ninth Symphony with its Ode to Joy!)

Given the compelling evidence of music's far-reaching impact, it would seem essential for one, regardless of age, to pursue this acknowledged method of nurturing the mind. *

In Sapieyevski's Professor Emeritus appointment, American University states:
"An amazing 100% of students on Rate My Professor report that they would take the course again."

In addition, here are a few (unedited) quotes from official evaluations of his various presentations - each quote comes from a different attendee:

"I will be able to appreciate all music on a higher level. The teacher is extraordinary.

Actually changed my way of thinking about life. It's been a really unusual and marvelous experience. Thanks, and please come back.

This class has been refreshingly different. I listen to music a lot and this course has inspired me to discover a new and more enjoyable way to listen.

I enjoyed the teacher tremendously. He is a great musician who inspired all of us in many ways that were unknown to us.

What a breath of fresh air! He is terrific with an interesting style (+ remarkable ability at the piano!)."
